Aristeidis (Aris) Tsantiropoulos is an Associate Professor in Social Anthropology at the Department of Sociology, University of Crete, where he teaches since 2002. His academic work focuses on social transformation, cultural heritage and social memory, visual culture, and collective trauma, grounded in ethnographic research with pastoral and maritime communities in Crete and the Aegean.

He holds a Ph.D. in Social Anthropology from the University of the Aegean and a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy and Social Sciences from the University of Crete. At the University of Crete he has also served as Director of the Laboratory of Visual Anthropology: Image, Music, Text, leading projects on social memory and cultural heritage.

Aris Tsantiropoulos’s research spans fieldwork on conflict and social organization (such as blood feuds in mountainous Crete), visual anthropology, and the anthropology of memory. He has published widely, including monographs and journal articles on social memory, identity, and cultural practices, and co-edited volumes on maritime cultural heritage and qualitative research in the social sciences.
He regularly teaches courses on Introduction to Social Anthropology, Contemporary Anthropological Theory, Greek Ethnography, Photography and Society, and Methodology of Ethnographic Research.
