Maria Heller PhD is a sociologist and linguist, former director of the Institute of Sociology at Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest. Her research interests include media and communications, theories of the public sphere, discourse analysis, new ICTs and the sociology of games. She participated in various international research programmes, among which Tempus and Erasmus research programmes, the “Changing Media – Changing Europe” programme organized by the European Science Foundation and she was a “Freedom of Speech” guest professor at Bergen University (Norway) in 2006-2007. She is an active member of various NGOs: the Living Memorial, the Virág Teréz research group on multi-generational trauma and the Network of Hungarian Academics.

Kutatási területei közé tartozik a média és a kommunikáció, a nyilvánosság elméletei, a diszkurzuselemzés, az új információs és kommunikációs technológiák és a játékszociológia. Számos nemzetközi kutatási programban vett részt, többek között Tempus és Erasmus programokban, az European Science Foundation által szervezett “Changing Media – Changing Europe” című programban, valamint 2006-2007-ben a norvégiai Bergeni Egyetem “Freedom of Speech” vendégprofesszora volt. Aktív tagja több civil csoportnak: az Eleven Emlékműnek, a Virág Teréz Traumakutató Csoportnak és az Oktatói Hálózatnak.
